Theresa's story starts when her dad died when she was 19 years old. She was pregnant with her second child and her dad got to choose her name just before he died. Here is her story, told by Theresa herself.
After my dad died, I moved in with someone else who was alright for a bit but soon turned nasty. He abused me for 2 years. I felt trapped and didn’t know how to get away from him. I felt weak and didn’t have the strength to stand up to him. After this my life went downhill and I split up with my partner (the father of my children) in 2009. In 2011 on Father’s Day he got drunk and turned very violent towards me. He dragged me by the hair outside and pushed me on the floor and stamped on my face. I felt disorientated and ended up in hospital because my jaw had come out of place. I decided it was time to get away from him for good. I was homeless with 2 children.
I went to stay with my mum and was on the priority housing list for 4 months before getting my own place where me and my girls are moving forward with help from Roundabout’s Supporting Tenant’s team. My confidence is coming back and am now looking for work. I can leave the house without being scared. I am not supported by Roundabout anymore but I have made some good friends during my time there.
I have a wonderful new partner now me and my girls are moving forward. I have been doing peer education with Roundabout for over a year and I have passed two qualifications and a Makaton course (sign language for children) and will be volunteering in a school teaching Makaton and working as a teaching assistant.
