Unable to continue living in his family home due to difficult circumstances and strained family relationships, Michael found himself homeless. For a period of two years Michael moved from various temporary accommodations, including sofa surfing at friends’ houses. As a young person with nowhere to call home, Michael lacked stability and was vulnerable and unhappy. Michael also has Asperger’s Syndrome and ADHD, causing further stress to Michael and, most upsetting of all, struggled with self-harm.
However, in early 2017 Michael was put in touch with EYH Member charity The Benjamin Foundation who provided him with supported accommodation. This proved to be a positive turning point for Michael.
The Benjamin Foundation supported Michael to settle in, assisted him in seeking out opportunities to grow and build his confidence and skills, and explored work and training opportunities. After just a few months the difference in Michael was huge.
Through EYH's Rent Deposit Scheme, Michael was supported in finding permanent accommodation. This property was perfect for Michael as it enabled him to maintain his important social connections, and it was close to transport links and a college, which gave Michael the ability to continue his education. Ordinarily the deposit for a property such as this would have been out of reach for Michael. Thanks to the RDS, Michael was able to move in and, with the help of a Home Essentials grant, he was able to buy essentials to make the property the home he had dreamed of.
Shortly afterwards, he was approached by the manager of a local charity shop and was offered the opportunity to volunteer. New pathways to build his skills and confidence are now opening up in ways that were not possible a few years ago.
The Rent Deposit Scheme has given him hope, opportunity, stability and independence.
